Bill Slegg

 

A Chartered Engineer, Bill has been Managing Director of British Power International since 1999. Prior to that he was Director of our Transmission and Distribution group.

As a practising manager, Bill worked for one of the leading UK energy companies and was responsible for controlling the largest electricity distribution network in the UK. His technical and managerial background includes network performance, investment planning, network management and asset maintenance, together with managing the technical and commercial interface with generators. He has extensive experience in delivering performance improvements and was part of the leadership team responsible for the transformation of a state owned electricity distributor into one of the lowest cost, highest performing electricity businesses in the UK.

As an experienced consultant and adviser to governments, regulators and private sector companies, Bill has directed a wide range of power projects including those in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the Caribbean.


Mel Brown

Mel is our Resource Manager for the UK. He is a qualified electrical engineer with over 35 years technical and managerial experience in all aspects of the Electricity Supply Industry within the United Kingdom. An experienced Distribution Engineer he was the Regional Manager for an electricity company responsible for an area serving up to 650k customers leading a team of direct workforce of 650 staff. Operating in a regulated business environment, he has a thorough understanding of the management and compliance issues associated with asset management, fault reporting and performance standards. Through his general management experience he understands the key issues of utility management in particular those matters concerning, safety, operational and maintenance of both urban and rural distribution networks. While Head of Technical Training he led a team of trainers and was responsible for shaping and delivering all the training needs for a major UK network operator. His Project Management experience has included the gas conversion of two coal burning power stations and he was the Principal Project Manager on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project. As a consultant with BPI he has headed up a team of technical specialists providing customised technical and project management solutions to network owners. He has overseas experience working in Nigeria, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.


Prakash Dey

A well qualified electrical engineer, Prakash joined BPI during 2003 from an international engineering consultancy based in Brunei. Prakash has a first class degree in engineering, is a member of the IEE and brings experience of working in India, Thailand and Brunei as well as the UK. With a research background in the nuclear sector, through working for Kavaerner and HHC, Prakash has become an experienced designer and project manager of electrical installations in a wide range of operating environments. He is currently working on the design, specification and installation of major sub stations for two UK clients.


Michael Dodwell

Mike is a key member of the British Power International team with over 30 years' experience in the electricity sector. A Chartered Engineer, Mike is a recognised industry expert in electricity distribution system reliability and efficiency improvements. Following a career as an engineering manager with a major UK electricity utility, he has worked on multilateral aid agency funded projects in India, Laos, Nepal, Bangladesh, Brazil, Thailand, Tunisia, Iran, Kenya, Pakistan and Nigeria. These projects have involved undertaking complete reviews of distribution networks including evaluation of losses, and making recommendations to improve system security, reliability and efficiency.

In Russia and Brazil, he was responsible for the evaluation of current generation strategies and IPP evaluation to encourage and boost international investment. He also led the preparation and development of pre-qualification criteria for potential bidders for an IPP project, and provided advice on the full range of transaction documents.


Dick Finbow

Dick is a qualified design engineer and experienced project manager with an all round and in depth knowledge of high voltage power systems.

As an engineer and manager, Dick was responsible for the development and design of the 132kV system for the UK's largest electricity distributor. With British Power International he is currently leading a design and project management team supporting one of our major UK clients on the re-development, modification and refurbishment their transmission and HV network. Dick has also worked internationally, most recently having completed a major project in the middle east for power plant, substations and transmission lines, involving tender preparation and evaluation for construction projects and project management.


Barry Furness

Barry is a seasoned utilities manager who has led teams responsible for delivering all aspects of customer services, in both competitive and regulated environments. As a practising manager he controlled the billing, collection and customer services function for a major energy utility, introducing innovative approaches to the collection and handling of customer data, the development of financial services and strategies for the management of debt. As a consultant with British Power International, he has had experience in the UK and overseas on projects which have led to the improvement of billing and collection processes, including project managing the application of IT solutions, debt management and recovery and commercial loss reduction.

When consulting for British Power International, Barry has worked in the Ukraine, Moldova, Mongolia, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan and the UK.


Simon Faiers

Simon is an experienced manager, executive and consultant. He led the Human Resources function for a major UK energy business and was a member of the management team charged with running a growing and successful energy company employing over 7,000 people. An expert in this field, he has been involved in managing the transition of a utility from state to private ownership, including the radical restructuring of pay, conditions and working practices. He also has 'hands on' experience of managing the HR issues associated with the acquisition, disposal, merger and restructuring of energy sector businesses.

In addition to his experience as a practicing manager, as a consultant Simon has advised companies on governance, change management and HR development, conducted due diligence studies and delivered workshops and seminars on HR issues in the UK and internationally. During 2002 he co-authored two major studies of the UK electricity industry for the Department of Trade and Industry. Internationally he has worked in Eastern Europe and Bangladesh.


Alan George

Alan, a Chartered Engineer, is an experienced electrical network design engineer, specialising in substation design, specification, construction and operation. He is fully familiar with electricity network operations, including supervisory control, protection, reactive compensation and all aspects of electrical safety. Following an electrical engineering career with an electricity distributor, as a consultant for British Power International Alan has worked as a designer, adviser and project manager in the Middle East and the Caribbean. He is currently managing a number of major design projects for one of the UK's electricity companies.


David Hoyle

David joined British Power International as a principal consultant in 2002. He has enjoyed a successful career in the UK electricity industry, principally with Norweb/United Utilities, gaining experience in a wide range of managerial and technical roles and covering all the key engineering disciplines. A chartered electrical engineer, David has been an active member of a number of national industry committees. Since joining BPI he has been working on business development, studies for the Department of Trade and Industry, BPI's work with Ofgem, and as a technical adviser on potential acquisitions in the UK energy sector.


George Hudson

George is a qualified engineer with 43 years' experience in the electricity sector, where he has been responsible for the specification, design and construction of overhead lines up to 132 kV. These duties included the Distribution and Planning Codes ensuring compliance with the appropriate regulatory standards. He reviewed and redrafted as necessary all the technical documents in this field in readiness for privatisation. George has served on international standards committees and is an experienced project manager, having managed transmission construction projects in Hong Kong (400kV) and Kuwait (132kV). As a senior consultant with British Power International, George has worked on investment appraisals for the international community. He has recently been the utility engineer for a consultancy team advising on a wide range of management and technical issues associated with a restructuring project. Other specific duties have included the specification of overhead lines encompassing the appropriate security of supply standards as well as the design requirements necessary to enable the distribution system to better withstand adverse weather conditions.


Oliver Joseph

A Chartered Electrical Engineer with nearly thirty years of experience in the UK power industry across a wide range of disciplines.  Trained as an electrical engineer, Oliver initially worked in distribution engineering and specialised in the technical aspects of electrical plant, substation design and network operations. In this period was a member of a number of UK national level committees and led formal enquiries following major plant failures where injury was sustained to members of the public or utility staff. Twelve years ago Oliver moved into Utility MIS and held various senior management positions with the distribution, telecoms, metering and retail businesses of a large utility company. He gained a good working knowledge of these business operations; including the regulatory issues which surround them, and understands the related IS requirements. In these businesses he was responsible for the implementation of a number of major IT programmes and managed day to day IT service delivery. He is a qualified programme manager (MSP accreditation), project manager (Prince 2 accreditation) and in IT Service Management (ITIL accreditation).


John Pereira

John is a qualified Electrical Engineer and recognised industry expert in the design of electricity distribution networks. With 30 years' experience in the electricity sector, John has established a reputation for the cost-effective design of power networks in the UK and overseas. He has contributed to the revision of various Standards relating to the design and operation of distribution networks, which entailed a detailed knowledge of the operation of the Distribution and Planning Codes including the associated security of supply requirements.

In Hungary and Turkey, John has undertaken due diligence studies including the preparation of technical audits and assessment of system losses. An experienced project manager, he has also been involved in assignments in the Middle East and the Caribbean developing policies for network design including the production of audits and draft regulatory standards.


John Rimell

John has over thirty years service in the electricity supply industry and has experience in all aspects of distribution network engineering up to and including 132kV. Formerly a senior manager and part of the leadership team responsible for running a major electricity distribution company, he is now Head of Commercial and Business Development for British Power International. As Head of Network Asset Management for one of the leading UK energy companies John was responsible for the development of asset management strategy and policy and for an average annual investment expenditure of £100 million. Whilst in this post he introduced a number of network performance improvements including condition-based asset maintenance policies, asset management planning methodologies and technology transfer processes. On leaving the electricity supply industry in 2000, John was appointed as Head of Strategic Asset Management for an independent consultancy firm, with particular emphasis on the worldwide utility sector. John has provided consultancy advice on best-practice asset management approaches to governments, regulators, and power and private sector companies in the UK and overseas. He is a visiting lecturer in asset management on the Power Distribution Engineering Distance Learning MSc course at Newcastle University, and is a trained and qualified PRINCE 2 Project Management Practitioner.


Gordon Roberts

Gordon is a Chartered Electrical Engineer, experienced manager, executive and consultant. He has over thirty five years experience in the electricity industry, of which over thirty were in operational roles and three in consultancy. He was General Manager of a large regional unit (c.400,000 customers) and a member of the executive of one of the UK's largest electricity distribution businesses during the transition from state ownership to the private sector.

An expert in business process redesign, he was responsible for the delivery of major efficiency and service improvements in an electricity business to meet the demands of tougher regulation and the impact of competition. Gordon advises on organisation re-design, and has conducted a number of wide ranging due diligence studies for clients. He has a good working knowledge of the UK regulatory framework and, through his work as a consultant, has experience of operating regimes worldwide including those in the United States, Czech republic, Finland, Turkey, Poland and Holland.


Gary Stokes

Gary is a qualified electrical engineer and project manager who has worked for more than twenty five years with companies in the UK electricity sector. As an engineer with Eastern Group for fifteen years, he has been involved with all aspects of transmission engineering design, operations and maintenance. Gary has in-depth experience of project managing transmission works involving both new construction - including grid connections for embedded generators - and major refurbishment. His project management experience includes the installation of an extensive new telecommunications network involving the addition of fibre optic cables to the existing power network. Gary was also Construction Manager in a telecommunications company, responsible for the installation of an SDH communication network.

As one of our consultants Gary has worked with UK clients and internationally in Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.


Geoff Stott

Geoff is a Chartered Engineer with over 30 years experience in the Electricity Industry, having worked for two Electricity Companies across a range of technical and managerial disciplines. A seasoned Distribution Engineer, Geoff became a regional Engineering Manager for a unit with a network supplying 600,000 customers in an area of c.2,000 square miles. Geoff is an experienced manager of resources (financial, physical and people) and offers proven capability as a project manager.

In his capacity as Quality Development Manager at the Head office of a UK energy company, Geoff was responsible for the design and delivery of quality improvement projects, monitoring programme progress and the audit of longer-term outcomes. As a British Power International consultant, Geoff has focussed on UK regulatory and customer service issues, managing two major projects for the UK Regulator, Ofgem.


Ron Webb

Ron joined BPI during 2002 from an engineering consultancy, having had a career in the UK electricity industry, principally with Eastern Electricity. A chartered electrical engineer with broad experience of distribution engineering, Ron adds an important dimension to the team. A regular member of panels of enquiry into technical plant failures and safety matters his background is as a technical trainer and expert on safety matters, the preparation of operational procedures, protocols and assessment/authorisation systems.

Since joining BPI, Ron has been working on a range of HV projects - carrying out design and managing installation - for UK clients. Internationally he has worked on designing and implementing operational procedures in Oman and a network asset audit for a multi-national manufacturer.

Corporate support

Our head office staff, based at The Octagon in Colchester, England add expertise and coordination to the front line team. Janet Berry is a Director of British Power International and Company Secretary. She brings to our work a broad knowledge of the electricity sector, having been with a major supply company in audit and as Administration Manager for an Operations and Emergency Response Centre. Matt Adams, a project administrator and CAD designer joined the team, from the engineering consultancy Osprey, in late 2002. Matt also manages the BPI web site.

Working at the Colchester office, alongside the engineering design team is Bernard Wild an experienced CAD designer.
