Innovative substation design in the UK
A new 132/33/11kV substation was required as part of a major investment programme by EDF Energy Networks in and around the city of Cambridge, to reinforce existing and accommodate further
growth in power supplies. BPI were engaged to provide the detailed civil and electrical design and specification, and provide project management support through construction and
commissioning.
Civil engineers produced an elegant, simple building with a curved roof, in sympathy with the high quality buildings on the adjacent Cambridge Science Park, occupying the smallest
physical space. Appropriate and sympathetic materials were used and sensitive landscaping complements this prestigious engineering project.
Electrical engineers provided the detailed design and specification for the 132, 33 and 11kV switchgear and transformers, and supported the project through testing and commissioning
to operation.
The BPI team pulled together the full range of specialisms, with important roles being played by the Chief Designer Prakash Dey, lead civil engineer John Price and project manager David Hoyle.
