The main focus was on transmission and distribution but also included examples where such networks were privatised jointly with other utilities, e.g. where an electricity network has been bundled with a gas or water network. <br /><br /> The study of historical privatisations included an analysis of privatisations split by regions, by energy type and quantified by network length and number of connections; which privatisation models were adopted in which regions; and an assessment of the success rate of announced privatisations and average delay from initially announced schedule. <br /><br /> The assessment of future privatisations analysed opportunities in each region and, in particular, which networks were expected to be privatised over the next ten years and what are the published timescales for privatisations of the electricity networks in each region / country. A particular aspect of the study was the identification of  hot regions for opportunities within 5 years including those which are likely to be utility dominated and those expected to be investor dominated. A list of specific potential projects was also prepared.<br /><br /> In order to give an indication of the potential size of markets in which the client may be wishing to enter, BPI analysed data from 167 countries around the world. Using a top down approach we derived an indicative value for each country of total electricity distribution and transmission operating costs and capital expenditure.<br /><br /> The study also included an appraisal of the multi-national utilities, global operating companies and financial institutions that have taken advantage of the investment opportunities that became available as a result of electricity industry reforms around the world. Potential partners with either technical expertise or asset funding experience were also identified.<br /><br /> A comprehensive report was produced as a reference guide for the client which was presented to and discussed with senior executives to assist in their strategic thinking. <br /><br /> </p> <p class="footnote">* Please note that we maintain commercial confidentiality regarding work undertaken for customers.
